PM announces marriage conscience vote for ALP

The Prime Minister Julia Gillard this week had an opinion piece published in The Age newspaper in which she confirmed her personal view that marriage should remain between a man and a woman, but nonetheless offered members of the ALP a conscience vote on it if it comes into the parliament.

Ms Gillard has chosen to support a conscience vote for party members because some people within the party were seeking to make support for same-sex marriage the official party policy at the ALP National Conference in December, forcing ALP MPs to vote for it in the parliament.

This announcement makes it especially important to sign the marriage petition, as the some people in the party will continue to push for same-sex marriage as party policy. Please encourage your friends and family to sign the petition.
